FPL Moves Forward with Solar Expansion

Florida Power & Light on Monday installed the first of what it anticipates will be nearly 1 million new solar panels at three plants in the state’s Treasure Coast region, the company said.

The installation of the panel at Blue Cypress Solar Energy Center in Indian River County is part of an effort, announced earlier this year, to boost FPL’s overall solar footprint to 2,100 megawatts by 2023, enough to power more than 420,000 homes.

In addition to two plants in Indian River County and one in St. Lucie County expected to be completed by March 2018, the company has five other similar-sized facilities underway. The other new plants are fully or in parts of Hendry, Brevard, DeSoto, Putnam and Alachua counties. The company anticipates solar will account for about 4 percent of its energy in 2023, according to the company’s 2017-2026 Ten Year Site Plan was filed in April.
