Veteran lineman for the City of Ocala passes

A veteran linemen for Ocala Utility Services lost his life while working to repair an electric transformer on Friday evening, May 25. Timothy Beard was an employee with OUS for over 11 years. He became an electric lineman in 2009.

Timothy or, known to his fellow lineworkers as “Timmy”, competed in several of the Florida Lineman Competitions as an Apprentice from 2006-2009. He won First Place Overall Apprentice in 2006 and 2008 and several individual events throughout the competitions. Also In 2006, the Florida Lineman Competition introduced a new mystery event – the Mutual Aid Event in which competitors were teamed up to perform an event. Timothy and his team members, Roger Hull (Orlando) and Michael Gramling (Tallahassee) took First Place in the Apprentice category.

Many Florida Lineman Competition Judges remember Timothy as very smart, competitive, eager to learn and ― most of all ― a team player. When Timothy came on the scene in 2006 he immediately was recognized as a star competitor. This year the Florida Lineman Competition was March 31 in Gainesville, although Timothy did not compete this year, he came to the competition to show his support.

Timmy will be missed by the Florida Public Power Linemen brotherhood and the band of lineworkers across the country. He was preceded in death by daughter Megan Beard. He is survived by his wife, Julie Beard; daughter, Brittany Beard; father, David Beard; mother, Christine Looney; stepfather, Henry “Jr.” Loos; brother, Jimmy Beard; and sister, Dana Loos.

If you would like to contribute to the Florida Lineworker Assistance Fund that will provide a monetary donation to his family, please contact Brenda Thompson, Office Manager of FMEA 850-224-3314 ext 3.
